The Beretta SO4 Trap, produced in 1975, is a high-grade Italian sidelock over/under built for serious competition shooting, representing one of Beretta’s most respected target gun platforms. Chambered in 12 gauge (2.75"), it features 29" Boehler Antinit steel barrels choked Modified (.023") and Full (.038"), a configuration well-suited for trap shooting and longer target presentations. The gun is built on a true sidelock action with a single non-selective trigger, ejectors, and non-automatic safety, offering both refinement and reliability in a competition setting.
The barrels are fitted with a 9.5mm wide matted ventilated rib, aiding in precise sight alignment, and are marked with standard Beretta inscriptions and 1975 Italian proofs. The action is finished in a brushed bright coin finish and features attractive scroll engraving with full border coverage, along with “P. Beretta” signatures on each lockplate. Additional markings include “SO.4” on the lower tang and a silver-inlaid “TRAP” on the trigger guard, reinforcing its intended purpose.
The stock is a well-figured walnut with a right-hand Monte Carlo configuration, including a palm swell and multi-point checkering, designed to promote a consistent and elevated sight picture for trap shooting. A notable detail is the brass grip cap plaque marked “ORO-BRONZO / Olympic rings / MONACO 1972”, adding a unique competition-era touch. The forend features matching checkering and an engraved blued iron, maintaining the gun’s cohesive aesthetic.
This example remains in very fine overall condition, retaining approximately 98% of its original blue and brushed finishes. There is minor discoloration and light spotting on the action, along with typical handling marks. The forend iron shows a slight plum hue, and the recoil pad exhibits some age-related deterioration. The checkering remains sharp throughout, and mechanically the gun is excellent, with smooth operation and tight lock-up.
