Description: Authentic WWI Colt 1911 .45 Auto C.1917 Military Issue W/Updates Up for sale and just acquired is this authentic classic Colt Model 1911 U.S. military rifle made during WWI. This specimen, serial number 178213 was made circa 1917. It carries very sharp Colt slide address as well as “Model of 1911 U.S. Army” stampings. It retains most of its original blued WWI finish mixing with grey patina. It has original WWI Colt factory diamond checkered wood grips and also a SCARCE period-correct two-toned military magazine. It was updated most probably at an arsenal during WWII with extended backstrap and perhaps later by original owner with takedown lever, bushing and hammer touched up. The barrel is an blued Colt barrel marked "COLT .45 Auto" on the side of barrel and a "P" on the lug. This is probably a late 1930s commercial Colt Government Model barrel which had same markings and very similar to early WWII barrels or a post WWII replacement barrel as Colt continued the practice after the war and look nearly identical to wartime barrels. Also it comes with a fine BOYT 42 marked holster. It has seen not a great deal of use. Has a small amount of peppery patina in spot next to serial number but overall very sound and in great condition for a pistol over 100 years old. This pistol’s serial number (178213) places it firmly in mid-1917 production, part of a U.S. military contract during World War I. At that time, Colt produced around 300,000 Model 1911 pistols in total for the war effort. These were finished in a brushed blue or “carbonia blue” finish, marked on the left side of the slide with Colt’s patent and address lines, and “MODEL OF 1911. U.S. ARMY” on the right. The U.S. Inspector stamp appears on the left side of the frame above the trigger. The slide marks are proper on both the left and right sides. the U.S. inspector markings are there "GHS" which stands for Gilbert H. Stewart U.S. Army ordnance inspector from 1914-1918. As mentioned it has sharp original stampings, diamond-checkered walnut grips and original two-tone magazine (very desirable). The BOYT 42-marked holster (WWII production, complements display value of this piece. These features all indicate a pistol with strong originality and collector appeal, though not purely original due to post-service modifications. The arsenal rework (likely WWII era, given the extended backstrap) and owner-level part replacements (slide stop, bushing, hammer) place it apart from fully original, but the combination of authenticity, condition, and completeness still make it a respectable collectible -and for the purist who has the ability to access these minor original parts the collector value will “soar”.
