Description:
Merkel .470 NE Model 140-2.1 Safari
Gebruder Merkel of Suhl Germany double rifle completed around. Based on slightly bolstered and scalloped A&D boxlock action w/ the addition of a Greener style crossbolt third fastener and intercepting sears, clipped fences, pin cocking indicators on the sides of the action body, manual safety, two triggers, and disk-set strikers.
The action features hand engraved game scenes of a bull elephant on the left side and a male lion on the right side. Arabesque scroll engraving surrounds the game scenes and extends on to the fences, furniture, and bottom of the action. The action and forend iron are brushed bright and the barrels, guard bow, top lever, and safety button are finished black.
The chopper lump barrels are 23 5/8” (60 cm) and have a full length machine matted rib. The raised quarter rib portion has 1 standing/1 folding Express rear sight and the raised ramp foresight has a brass faced sight blade.
The nicely figured stock has a straight comb w/ a RH cheekpiece, a full pistol grip w/ a solid polymer grip cap, and a 14 3/8” LOP over a factory red rubber recoil pad. The splinter forend has a Deeley type forend release.
This is a non-ejector rifle w/ “lifters” only. Rear sling swivel attachment on the toe line of the stock and the forward sling swivel attachment is mounted to the bottom of the barrels.
We have test fired the rifle and it shoots very well w/ factory loaded Hornady Dangerous Game 500gr DGS ammo.
The rifle is complete in the Maker’s lightweight canvas flat case and remains very good overall. There are various superficial handling marks on the wood, but the metal on the receiver and barrel remain excellent with excellent bores.
A very nice rifle ready to go for your next dangerous game trip.
