This is a very handsome and imposing pistol that has developed an overall dark gray and mottled black patina with mild pinprick pitting along the barrel, heaviest at the breech around the vent. The lock has a slightly more plum-brown patina, and has a more smooth metal surface, although there is consistent pitting within the pan. The barrel has deeply struck London proofs, and minimal decorative engraving along the top with the maker’s name within the panel: "H.W. MORTIMER & LONDON." The name is repeated on the lockplate, and there is a small amount of decorative embellishment on the swan-necked cock. The plain, pin-fastened walnut stock has numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes scattered about the otherwise fine added oil finish, and has an engraved trigger guard with acorn finial, and two ramrod pipes. The lock is fully functional, locking firmly at both half and full-cock, and the sliding safety also works perfectly. The original horn-tipped ramrod is also included. Harvey Walklate Mortimer (1753 & 1819) was a London maker and member of the famous Mortimer family of gunmakers. This example of his work is in fine condition, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Antique; SOLD Antique: Yes |
