Description:
Serial #935, .577 Shot (approx. 28 Bore), 26 3/4" barrel with a very good bore that has some dark spots of pitting along its length. This is a very interesting converted Snider that has BSA markings on both the 1877-dated, "(Crown) / EIG" (East India Government) cyphered lock and receiver. Additionally, there are numerous pre-conversion British military acceptance proofs on the barrel breech and receiver. The metal has developed a mottled gray and plum-brown patina over time with thin freckling throughout, and a darker brown patina on the breech end of the barrel, as well as on the lock. The original adjustable rear sight was removed during the conversion, and a high fixed notch sight was added. Deeply struck "N.S. / N.A.H" (Native ‘Service’ or ‘State’ / Nahan, India) stamps are present just to the left of the rear sight, and there is no bayonet stud on the right side of the barrel. The walnut stock has numerous small handling marks and blemishes scattered throughout the thick, added oil finish, with an engraved rack number on the buttplate tang: "68" or "89", and a stenciled inventory mark and date on the left side of the buttstock: "R.E.P. / 9 & 57." An original, mismatched number ramrod is included and the rear sling swivel was removed at some point. These interesting guns have been associated with prison guard use (prison firearms of the time were required to be smooth-bored) and research indicates that a British military prison was built in 1849 at Dagshi, State of Nahan, India. Further research might yield more results as to the actual circumstances under which these interesting Snider variants were issued and used, and this example rates very good condition overall.
