History of the Marlin Model 336
The Marlin Model 336 was introduced in 1948 as an evolution of earlier Marlin lever guns dating back to the 19th century. It quickly became one of the most popular sporting rifles in American history, with millions produced and a reputation for durability and accuracy.
One of the defining improvements of the 336 over earlier models was its side-ejecting design, allowing easy mounting of scopes—something top-ejecting rifles like the Winchester 94 struggled with.
In 1956, Marlin introduced Micro-Groove rifling, which used multiple shallow grooves to improve accuracy and reduce barrel fouling.
The .30-30 Winchester chambering has long been the most common for the 336 and remains one of the most trusted deer cartridges in North America.
JM Stamp Significance
The “JM" stamp (John Marlin proof mark) indicates the rifle was manufactured in the original Marlin factory prior to Remington’s takeover in 2007. These rifles—especially late 1990s to early 2000s examples like this one—are widely regarded as some of the best-produced 336s and are increasingly collectible.
