Description:
NAVY ARMS BLACKPOWDER CL50

The
Navy Arms Side Hammer .50 Caliber
(often referred to as a "mule ear" or "side-slapper" due to the hammer's positioning) is a classic percussion muzzleloading rifle designed for black powder enthusiasts.
Key Specifications
  • Caliber: .50 caliber, typically designed for lead round or conical balls.
  • Twist Rate: Commonly features a 1:32 twist barrel, which is relatively fast and ideal for stabilizing conical bullets and sabots.
  • Barrel: Often equipped with a 24-inch or 25-inch octagonal barrel.
  • Ignition System: Uses a percussion cap placed on a side-mounted nipple. This "mule ear" design provides a more direct spark path into the chamber, which some shooters find results in faster ignition compared to standard percussion locks.
  • Aesthetics: Generally features a walnut half-stock, brass hardware (such as the trigger guard and sleeves), and case-colored hammers and lock plates.

Performance & Usage
  • Effective Range: Similar to other .50 caliber muzzleloaders, it is generally effective for hunting up to approximately 100–150 yards.
  • Recommended Loads: A common starting point for .50 caliber rifles is 70–90 grains of Pyrodex RS or black powder. For deer hunting, shooters often use 240-grain or larger saboted bullets with 90–150 grains of propellant in modern equivalents.

Collector's Note
Navy Arms was founded in 1956 and is well-regarded for pioneering the modern replica and reproduction firearm industry. The side hammer model is particularly sought after by collectors of unique action types, as relatively small quantities were produced compared to standard Hawken-style rifles
