Description:
This a pre-WWII J. Stevens Arms Co. Model 315 side-by-side 12-gauge shotgun. This is the earlier, more desirable boxlock design featuring the scalloped receiver-to-stock fit and the classic roll-stamped "Flying Goose" engraving on the frame.
Condition & Mechanics:
- Action: Surprisingly tight lock-up with no wiggle, but the gun does not appear to cock or fire. Sold strictly as-is for parts, repair, or display. I cannot confirm functional safety or working condition. The gun was fairly dirty when I got it so it may just need a really good cleaning. The poor girl has been abused in an earlier life and needs a new home.
- Metal: Heavy patina and honest wear throughout. There is visible pitting on the receiver and along the barrels. The barrels look very clean but I didn't scrub them violently. The right barrel has a very, very small, shallow dent about 15" down. I don't have a bore scope but there appears to be a corresponding mark on the inside of the barrel at approximately the same spot. I can't tell if it is a bit of corrosion or what.
- Wood: Original walnut stock and fore-end. Shows numerous handling marks, scratches, and a typical stress crack behind the upper tang (common on these models).
- Identification: Matching serial numbers (H15404) found on the frame, barrels, and fore-end iron.
This would make an excellent "Gunsmith Special" for someone looking to restore or a source for hard-to-find early Stevens parts, or a handsome "wallhanger" for a cabin or shop.
