Pomeroy Model 1808 Contract Percussion Conversion Musket, made in 1811 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. This example would have started out life as a flintlock and then converted to percussion likely just before the start of the Civil War. This so-called Model 1808 contract musket was made by Lemuel Pomeroy & Company of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. This type of state contract musket, often referred to as the “transitional Model 1795 and Model 1808 contract” designation, holds no position in the early musket development or production of the U.S. government. During that time period mentioned, private arms contractors supplied the government’s needs with variations of the so-called Charleville Pattern musket in America. Lemuel Pomeroy gained his first government contract for muskets in mid-1816 and became a prolific maker of these longarms, devoting his entire production to various state contracts, such as Massachusetts and the State of New York, as is this example. Europe was embroiled in the Napoleonic Wars and the young United States was sorely unprepared for any major military action, so Congress moved to equip state militias in 1808. About 85,200 “Model 1808” Muskets were produced by a total of 19 different contractors and delivered to the state militias. This move proved to be none too soon as the War of 1812 brought part of the European conflict to the shores of the young United States. Lemuel Pomeroy was a perennial contractor of U.S. martial weapons in the first half of the 19th Century. Many of these flintlock muskets were later updated to percussion systems, such as this example, for use during the American Civil War. Both the lock and the barrel are marked “S.NY”, standing for State of New York. The barrel is inspector marked “P M” and “SJ” with a date of “1811”. This example has a "V/BY/1 " cartouche on the left side flat of the stock. The musket is mounted in iron hardware. The overall condition is good. Deep brown patina. Legible markings with a faint cartouche on the left stock flat. The stock has repairs at the barrel tang, in front of the lock plate and is well used yet remains solid. Strong action. The bore is smooth and dark. Front sling swivel is absent. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 42 inches.
