Description:
The Model of 1917 was developed by chambering the "Hand Ejector" model for .45 ACP and employing moon clips to act in the place of a rim for the extractor to engage. The motive for development was to aid in production of pistols for the demands of WWI when it was seen that Colt wasn't able to produce enough 1911's to supply the military. Smith and Wesson had a perfectly good factory that ws under-utilized, so they ran with it. This revolver turned out to be enough of a success that it was continued into the 50s and beyond as the Model 25 target pistol. .357 Magnum
