Description:
Serial #44661, .38 Rim fire, 7 ½ inch octagon barrel with an excellent bright bore with several isolated surface pits inside the grooves near the muzzle. This is the Remington New Model 1858 revolver with the factory conversion to metallic cartridges which included a hinged loading gate and attached ejection rod and has a simply engraved frame and silver plated trigger guard. The sights are a non-factory modification with a dovetailed front target type blade sight and an a filed rear square notch. The barrel is marked "PATENTED SEPT. 14 1858 MARCH 17, 1863 / E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK U.S.A. / NEW MODEL" with the serial number on the frame and underside of the barrel. In Fine condition the barrel, frame, loading lever and cylinder show about 55-60% of the original bright blue with the most loss on the barrel and grip frame that show a somewhat mottled gray brown finish. The engraved frame remains crisp and the grips are solid with perhaps half of the original finish extant. The hammer has somewhat muted original case colors. The action functions properly with correct indexing, the hammer holding at half and full cock with strong springs releasing with a crisp trigger pull. The shell ejection rod is held in place by the loading lever and functions properly as does the spring-loaded loading lever release. A fine example of a rarely seen engraved conversion Remington revolver. Antique
