This was originally a Civil War era six-shot percussion revolver that was converted to a five-shot cartridge revolver chambered in .45 Colt via the fitting of a new hardened steel cylinder and barrel, a fixed cylinder pin attached to the frame at the rear, and a long firing pin added to the hammer. The frame retains its original Starr markings, but Belgian proofs have also been applied to the barrel, cylinder, and frame. The metal retains 80-85% of an old, added rust blue finish, no doubt applied as part of the conversion as the blue on the frame matches that on the barrel and cylinder perfectly. There is silvering and gray fading present at the muzzle and along some of the high edges and projections, as well as light turn-rings on the cylinder. Matching numbers are present on the barrel assembly and on the frame under the grip. The walnut grip is in fine shape, with only very minor handling marks and small blemishes scattered about the otherwise excellent original oil finish. The action is fully functional and locks up firmly. A number of Civil War era Starr revolvers were rebuilt as .45 Colt cartridge guns sometime around the turn of the last century (the "{Crown} / E / LG" proof was adopted in 1893) and they are sometimes found on the US market in varying degrees of condition. This example is in fine-near excellent condition, and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique; SOLD Antique: Yes |
