.NEW PHOTOS....LOOKS MUCH MUCH BETTER IN HAND....58 cal, 33” three-groove barrel showing mild oxidation with strong rifling throughout. This is a fabulous condition musket retaining about 95% blue along the barrel, the loss due to light oxidation staining mostly around the muzzle. The lockplate and hammer retain about 90% case hardening showing a few light spots of oxidation staining, while showing lovely color overall. The brass hardware has taken on a pleasing warm golden patina with occasional specks of tarnish, and the patchbox contains a spare nipple. The American walnut stock is in excellent condition showing two crisp cartouches on the flat, with the typical light dings and scratches and some minor speckling. Principal markings remain crisp including “REMINGTON’S/ILION N.Y.” alongside “U.S.” and the Federal Eagle. The front of the lockplate bears a small “L” and the back is dated 1863. The breech is marked “STEEL” alongside “R.K.A.” inspector initials and bears a “V/P/(Eagle)” proof next to “1863”. The musket is equipped with the standard sights and an original ramrod is included. An attractive example of these rather uncommon long arms.
