Offered here for sale and just acquired is this fine rifle for the black powder shooting enthusiast- The Lyman Great Plains Rifle (.50 cal) is one of the more respected “modern traditional” muzzleloaders, and this rifle made in 1979 is from the very first year of production.
Introduced in 1979, when Lyman entered the muzzleloading market, built by Investarm in Italy, modeled after Hawken-style plains rifles used by 19th-century trappers and frontiersmen. It was designed as a historically styled but practical shooter, not just a wall-hanger.
Features of the 1979 model:
- .50 caliber (also made in .54)
- 32" barrel with 1:60 twist (ideal for patched round ball)
- Double set triggers
- Walnut stock, steel furniture
- Percussion ignition
- About 9 lbs, ~50" overall length
