Description:
Serial #8310, .476 Enfield, 6 1/8" barrels with excellent, bright Lancaster oval bores. This is a strikingly handsome pistol that has retained 40-50% of the original blue on the barrels, with the balance turned to a mixture of smooth pewter gray and plum-brown. The maker's marking on the rib, proofs, and caliber designation are all crisp and clear, while about 70-75% of the original blue still remains on the sides of the frame, and thumb-lever. Spots of mild freckling are present throughout, and the integral top tang has mottled freckling on metal that has worn to bright gray, transitioning to original blue on the frontstrap. The checkered walnut bird's head grips are in fine-excellent shape with some small surface blemishes in the original oil finish, as well as some mild flattening of the points. Lock-up is accomplished through a thumb-lever actuated stirrup along the top of the frame that engages two lugs on either side of the breech. The lock-up is superb, and the action is fully functional. The pistol is housed in an original six-compartment, green baize-lined, oaken traveling case. The Charles Lancaster label is intact and clearly legible on the inside of the lid, and the pistol is further accompanied by a metal cleaning rod, case key, and period glass oil bottle. While made concurrently with Webley's early service revolvers, some officers preferred the four very quick shots of these interesting pistols to revolvers as a defensive arm during tropical service abroad. This is a fine condition example, and represents an exceptional opportunity for the collector to acquire a very desirable British handgun. Antique;
