In 1875 Gilbert Harrington and former Frank Wesson employee, William Augustus Richardson, formed the new Harrington & Richardson Company. In 1888 the firm was incorporated as The Harrington & Richardson Arms Company. Their original capital investment was $75,000. Harrington was president, Richardson was treasurer, and George F. Brooks was secretary. This revolver was designed to be small and concealable for self-defense. It is chambered for 5 shots of .38 S&W, making it easily concealable and effective self-defense revolver. The “jazz age” was filled with gangsters and career thugs. Here we have a great example of a self-defense revolver that would have helped fend off those criminals! This five-shot revolver came with an auto-ejecting mechanism, hard rubber grips, a nickel finish, and barrel lengths of 2-1/2, 3-1/4 (standard), and 4, 5, & 6 inch barrels available. The barrel markings include the company name and address, and the early production guns also included the patent dates. On the Third Models, the left side of the barrel was marked “AUTO EJECTING .38 S&W CTGE” and was manufactured for smokeless powder. The first variation (1905-1908) had four patent dates, the model name, and caliber on the left side of the barrel. The second variation (1909-1912) had two patent dates, the model name, and caliber on the left side of the barrel. The third variation (1913-1915) had no patent dates and the name of the state is marked MASS. The fourth variation (1916-1924) the state of MASSACHUSETTS was spelled out. The fifth variation _1925-1941) had the new grip frame which is the same size as the rest of the frame with no step down for the grip panel. After 1931 this revolver was listed in the catalog as “H&R AUTOMATIC” No. 10 in .32 S&W Caliber with 6 shots and “H&R AUTOMATIC” No. 25 in .38 S&W Caliber with 5 shots. The overall condition is good. Most of the original nickel is present. The action only operates in double action and the cylinder has some wiggle when locked up. The bore has dimmed. Markings are legible. Both grips have chips missing from the butts. Visible numbers match. Own the original! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 3-1/4 inches.
