COLONIAL Antique “DOGLOCK” FLINTLOCK MUSKET Revolutionary War .80 Caliber
With London Proofed Barrel
Here we present an antique London Proofed Doglock Musket or Fowler, made in the 18th Century. This would be a representative of what the colonists were using prior to and during the American Revolutionary War. This type of arm would have served to put meat on the table, provide safety around the homestead, and performed military service when called upon. It has a versatile and quicker to load smoothbore barrel that could fire ball, shot or a devastating combination thereof known as “buck and ball”. Many such muskets or components came from England in the Atlantic trade.
The overall condition is fair. Dark patina. The lock has good spring tension and holds both cock notches but the trigger does not release the cock as it should, and the lock is a bit loose in the inlet. The bore is in good shape for its age: darkened and remains smooth. The stock has a splice repair in the forend that is solid and subtle, an extension grafted onto the butt stock, a solid wrist repair, and a crack that is slightly mobile just about under the nose of the lock. A good example of a colonial smoothbore musket!
