Description:
British TOWER Marked Antique INDIA Pattern BROWN BESS .75 FLINTLOCK Musket

NAPOLEONIC WARS Era Musket with CROWN/TOWER Lock

Here we present an antique Brown Bess Flintlock Musket made in London, England circa 1815. This is an India Pattern musket, nicknamed the “Brown Bess”. This was the standard weapon for ordinary soldiers in the British infantry. It is called the India Pattern because it was originally designed to arm the private army of the Honorable East India Company, which governed India until the Mutiny of 1857. It was very similar in form to an earlier type of musket known as the Short Land Pattern, which was introduced in the early 1740s for cavalry soldiers known as “dragoons”.

This pattern of the Brown Bess musket, also known as the “India Pattern,” was used in key battles against Napoleon and during the War of 1812 with the U.S. and Native allies. Originally introduced in 1722 and updated by the Honorable East India Company, these muskets were diverted from EIC contracts to support Britain’s war efforts against France. Between 1793 and 1815, nearly 3 million units were produced, mainly by Birmingham manufacturers, with London gunmakers like Ezekial Baker, William Parker, Thomas Reynolds, and Durs Egg contributing approximately 845,477 muskets.

Overall condition is good. Modestly and tastefully restored for future preservation. The stock remains solid with a stable crack at the bottom of the lock. The markings are legible. The rear lock screw doesn’t thread completely. The action is strong. The bore is dark. A Brown Bess that has been there and done that!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 39 inches.
