The Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum (retroactively referred to by collectors as the "Pre-Model 29") is a legendary, large N-frame double-action revolver. Introduced in late 1955 and heavily promoted in 1956, it was the world's first production handgun chambered for the .44 Remington Magnum cartridge, developed in a joint effort between legendary outdoorsman Elmer Keith, Smith & Wesson, and Remington Arms. Before Smith & Wesson began stamping numerical model designations (like "Model 29") inside the crane in 1957, this firearm was simply known as the ".44 Magnum". The 6.5-inch barrel variant is highly iconic, as it served as the original production length and went on to achieve massive legendary status on the silver screen.
