A Smith & Wesson revolver with a 4" barrel specifically chambered in .38 S&W (not to be confused with the common .38 Special) which refers to the .38 Military & Police (M&P). While most modern 4" S&W revolvers are .38 Special, the .38 S&W was a popular military and police caliber throughout the early-to-mid 20th century. Note that the .38 S&W is a lower-pressure, softer-shooting round compared to the modern .38 Special. Because this caliber is no longer in mainstream service, these revolvers are primarily sought after by collectors or enthusiasts of vintage service firearms. .38 S&W
