Ledyard Blair paid 183 British pounds for the pair with the O&L trunk, which was about $950 U.S. ////////////////////////////// Mr. C. Ledyard Blair was a prominent American Investment Banker and a Yachtsman. His turn of the century historic 38-room mansion called “Blairsden” still stands to this day in Peapack, New Jersey. In recent years the Blairsden Estate was under heavy restoration. He also owned a mansion in New York City, now known as C. Ledyard Blair House. He was the grandson of John Insley Blair, one of the wealthiest men of the 19th century. /////////////////////////////// Joseph Lang married James Purdey daughter and was one of the first pioneers of breech loading sporting firearms in the 1850's. He was very active with sporting dogs and early day field trials. It became Joseph Lang & Son in 1875, the son also named Joseph, apprenticed at Purdey. They moved to 10 Pall Mall in 1890 and became Joseph Lang & Son Ltd. in 1901. In 1907 the firm introduced the ever popular 470 Nitro Express. The sole USA agent was Abercrombie & Fitch in 1914 with a 5 year agreement. In 1925 the firm went with Stephen Grant. In the 1930's Grant & Lang joined with Atkin, Beesley, Hellis, Hussey, Watson Bros. and Lancaster. In 1960 the firm was operating as Atkin, Grant & Lang and by 1971 it was Churchill, Atkin, Grant & Lang. In the 1990's Ken Duglan operated it as AG&L and by mid-2011 Mr. Francis Lovel purchased the business. He was no stranger to the trade as he also owns Francis Lovel & Co. Ltd. Mr. Lovel shortly thereafter started building Grant over & unders, Grant sidelever's, Atkin spring openers, Atkin over & unders, Lang double express rifles and Lang bolt rifles.
