Description:
L.L.BEAN 100th ANNIVERSARY PROTOTYPE!
MERKEL SIDELOCK EJECTOR SHOTGUN ... 20 gauge ... 28" shoe lump barrels with concave matted game rib ... 3" chambers ... weight 6 lbs 4 oz ... LOP 14 1/2" over checkered butt plate ... drop comb 1 7/16" ... drop heel 2 1/2" ... bore dia: L.625 R.625, bore restrictions: L.014(Mod) R..008(IC), wall thickness: L.030 R.031 ... ejectors ... automatic safety ... cocking indicators ... detachable locks with H&H style takedown pins ... double triggers.
Two prototypes were made with number 001 being kept by the family. (The Spring 2013 issue of "The Double Gun" has a superb article on gun 001 which begins on page 19). This gun, number 002, was the working prototype and has been handled, shot and positively reviewed by respected writers for 'Field & Stream', 'Shooting Sportsman', 'Upland Almanac', 'Sporting Classics' and others. From 'Upland Almanac', "a fantastic high quality shotgun that anyone would be proud to own". This will be the only L.L.Bean prototype that will ever be available to the public.
The coin finished action is engraved and signed by longtime Merkel master engraver, 'B.Hafner'. There is well shaded, open floral scroll surrounding game scenes on each side. The right side shows 3 woodcocks in a dense forest setting with the left side showing a German shorthair on point as 3 ruffed grouse explode from cover and also the engraver's signature. The bottom features a Maine hunting shoe inset in gold and flanked by the years '1912' and '2012'. Smokey colored, densely marbled Circassian walnut was selected for the straight grip English stock and the splinter forearm. The Deeley forearm release also has matching scroll engraving. Finepoint, skipline checkering is generously spread over the front and rear grip surfaces and the butt plate. There is a 'yet-to-be-initialed' gold oval inset in the toeline.
The dark brown leather case has stitched corners and a stiched on L.L.Bean label inside and out. Included accessories are a cocobolo & brass two peice cleaning rod, mop & jag & brush in a leather case, snap caps, square plated oil bottle and an L.L.Bean wipe down cloth.
Overall condition is near new. The bores are perfect, mechanics and wood have had careful use and the case shows use only on the straps.  Call with any questions and see our other listings for ... "Only the best!"
