Description:
A fine and beautiful Pima Olla (pronounced oy ya) basket made around 1880-1890. These highly desirable baskets were utilitarian and constructed for carrying grain and other foods in the pre reservation and early reservation periods. They were made using bands of bear grass for the foundation...base...shoulder and rim and had willow, bear grass and devils claw woven throughout with the devils claw being darker and making the design. The central pattern would be a maze. This basket remains in excellent condition with evidence of use and a great patina that only comes from age and use. The basket measures about 11 inches tall and 10 1/2 inches wide at the shoulder...the mouth measures between 6 and 8 inches...8 being the widest. There are no repairs or any significant damage. A fine Pima Olla for the American Indian basket collector.
