The title of this painting is "A Visit with an Old Pal". Harry Bentz was born in 1921 and died in 2003 in Philipsburg, Montana. His father was a cowboy and a rancher so Harry grew up with horses and being around cattle. He broke horses at an early age and loved the cowboy life. He also raised hounds and hunted mountain lions, bobcats, bear and coyotes. He had hounds until the 1990's. A fresh lion track in the snow always gave him a thrill. He started drawing wildlife as a small boy and was an admirer of Will James and Charles M. Russell. In 1940 he started his career as a rodeo Bronc rider which he continued until 1951 as a member of the Rodeo Cowboy's Association. After retiring from the Rodeo, Harry spent several years as a guide and packer for big game in Montana. He spent countless hours fishing, hunting, horseback riding, breaking horses, playig the guitar and singing, prospecting and on his art work. He began oil painting and sculpting in the early 1960's while working on a ranch near Kennewick Washington. He was self trained and did all his paintings and sculptures free hand using no pictures or patterns. This oil on board painting measures 23 inches wide by 17 1/2 inches tall.
