Description:
#15850 & 15851, Joseph Lang & Son, 7 Bury Street, St. James's, London: A 12 Bore Pair of Bar Action Sidelock Ejector Game Guns Made 1917, 28" Ejector Dovetail lump barrels with a rib extension third bite: Both guns with modern and new barrels installed and proved in Birmingham in 1971, Both barrels remain as new since 1971: The #1 gun Birmingham proved at 3 tons with 2 1/2" chambers, #1 is .730 .013 & .024" (Imp.Cyl. & Mod.), 2 1/2" chambers: The #2 gun Birmingham proved at 3 tons with 2 1/2" chambers, #2 is .730 .011 & .023" (Imp.Cyl. & Mod.), 2 1/2" chambers, The pair with Ejectors, Double triggers, Splinter forend with an Anson release, Straight hand stock and both 15 1/16 x 1 1/2 x 2 7/16" over 3/4" leather pads with plugs for easy removal, Slight cast-off for the right hand, Both guns 6 lbs. 12 oz., 96% coverage of period rose & scroll engraving, The action body's recolor hardened & remain at 99% case colors, The barrel blue still at 98% on both, The buttstocks and forends refinished and remain at 98%, The checkering at 94%, Number 1 & 2 in Gold, The engraving is very sharp & crisp and appears to have been re-cut, All 4 barrels are as new inside & out, I have a fairly strong feeling these guns went back thru Lang when they were operating as Atkin, Grant & Lang or as Churchill, Atkin, Grant & Lang, The reason I feel strongly about that is this pair was originally made when Lang was at 102 New Bond Street and now both sets of barrels are clearly marked 7 Bury Street where they operated in the 1960's & 1970's, The pair is not cased. Here is a very nice pair of guns with new modern barrels & refinished in England.///////////////////////// Joseph Lang married James Purdey daughter and was one of the first pioneers of breech loading sporting firearms in the 1850's. He was very active with sporting dogs and early day field trials. It became Joseph Lang & Son in 1875, the son also named Joseph, apprenticed at Purdey. They moved to 10 Pall Mall in 1890 and became Joseph Lang & Son Ltd. in 1901. The sole USA agent was Abercrombie & Fitch in 1914 with a 5 year agreement. In 1925 the firm went with Stephen Grant. In the 1930's Grant & Lang joined with Atkin, Beesley, Hellis, Hussey, Watson Bros. and Lancaster. In 1960 the firm was operating as Atkin, Grant & Lang and by 1971 it was Churchill, Atkin, Grant & Lang.
