Sharps – Borchardt Model 1878 Military Target Rifle (British Marked
Description: NSN, .45-70, 32" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is an interesting rifle that has a small British military acceptance mark on the left side of the barrel breech in addition to the standard Sharps markings. The metal has retained about 75-80% of the original blue with some fading along the sides of the receiver along with some fairly even spots of plum-brown freckling throughout. In addition to the original military type sights, the barrel is also fitted with a windage adjustable front sight base, and the comb of the butt is inlet for mounting a Vernier style long range sight for shooting from the recumbent position. The mechanics are tight and functional. The walnut forend and buttstock have numerous small handling marks and blemishes under a fairly thick added varnish, but the “LB" cartouche is still crisp on the left side of the butt. The rifle was the property of Constable John Anderson of the W.R. Yorkshire Constabulary who was twice a member of the Great Britain Police Shooting Team, and competed in the European Police Shooting Championships in 1960 and 1963. P.C. Anderson became a gun dealer after he retired and, according to his son in an accompanying information sheet, purchased this rifle as lot 166 in a 1971 Weller & Dufty (a July 16th, 1971 Birmingham Proof House certificate also accompanies the rifle and declares the rifle obsolete, and exempt from proof firing). No ramrod is included with the rifle. Antique SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Sharps Model: Borchardt Caliber Info: .45-70 Gauge Info: .45-70 |
