Excellent Automatic Revolving Massachusetts Arms Co. Maynard Primed Pocket Percussion Revolver. Serial number #496. .28 cal percussion. 3" barrel with an excellent bore. blued and case hardened.
These later versions of the Mass. Arms Co. Maynard Primed Pocket Revolvers were manufactured after the expiration of Samuel Colt's patent in 1857, and only around 1,500-2,000 were manufactured in a few variations before production stopped around 1860. The barrel has a brass cone front sight, and the top strap has "MASS ARMS CO/CHICOPEE FALLS" and a small notch rear sight. The primer door has scroll engraving and "MAYNARD'S PATENT/SEP. 22. 1845." The left side of the frame and the heel also have scroll engraving, and the cylinder has floral and martial etching. The front of the barrel latch has "NOV. 25. 1830" The back strap is marked "PATENT/JAN. 2 1855." "496" is marked under the primer door on the frame, the back of the door, right side of the front strap, and hand written on the back of the grips, and "766" is on the bottom of the top strap and top of the cylinder pin. This is
in Excellent Condition overall with 95% plus original blue finish, 85% plus original case colors visible on hammer and top strap, smooth gray and brown patina where the finish is absent, minor scratches, crisp engraving and markings, and a few minor handling/storage marks on the otherwise excellent grips.
