Sharps 45-70 Rifle 1874 Model with Set Trigger and Fire Triggers and Tang Sight
Description: Sharps Model 1874 Meacham Type Conversion. "Old Reliable" 45-70 Buffalo Gun, blue and case hardened finish, wood stocks, double triggers with set trigger, SN CXX110, Barrel #160659 and added tang rear sight. Tangent sight mount obscures reciever serial number. This gun is in overall good condition showing blue finish on the barrel. The reciever coloring is mixed with brown patina and hints of original case colors under the hammer and on the lock plate with balance of action gone to brown and silvery toning; good working action, set triggers working; bore, very good condition throughout with no corrosion, pits or rust. Barrel Length: 28 inch heavy round. Stocks are coarsely checkered in a diamond pattern. Manufacture ca. 1879. Grading: NRA Antique fine to excellent. Caliber: 45-70 Condition: Metal smoothly rusted or lightly pitted in places, cleaned; principal lettering, numerals and design on metal legible; lightly scratched, bruised or minor cracks repaired; in good working order. This rifle has a working set trigger: A set trigger allows a shooter to have a greatly reduced trigger pull (the resistance of the trigger) while maintaining a degree of safety in the field compared to having a conventional, very light trigger. [A] A double set trigger accomplishes the same thing, but uses two triggers: one sets the trigger and the other fires the weapon. Set triggers are most likely to be seen on customized weapons and competition rifles where a light trigger pull is beneficial to accuracy. (B) A set trigger allows the operator to have a very light trigger pressure (which makes it easier to maintain accuracy) while at the same time not having his rifle go off at every bump, jolt and shove. History: Designed to fire metalic cartridges. Best known as the “Buffalo Rifle,” due to its heavy use by hide hunters, it was made from 1871 until 1881.Sharps’ 1874 model didn’t get the ’74 moniker until after the introduction of later Sharps rifles. Only 12,445 of the various model 1874 Sharps were produced by the factory. It was offered in such powerful big-game loads as .44-77, .45-70, .50-90 and .50-110. An 1887 government survey cited the Sharps single-shot rifle with shooting more buffalo than any other gun during the hide-hunting years of 1867 through 1882. Among its famous users were lawman Bill Tilghman, during his buffalo hunting years; the Union Pacific Railroad; and Martha “Calamity” Jane Canary.
