Issued & Identified Starr 1858 Double Action Revolver Belonging to Co. K, 19th PA Cavalry Soldier
Description: DESCRIPTION: Starr Arms Model 1858 double action 44 caliber percussion revolver, serial # 16437, with standard 6" round barrel, 6-shot cylinder and walnut grips with inspector cartouches on both grips. Multiple sub inspector initials appear on various locations of the revolver and all of the serial numbers match on the cylinder, front of frame, top of frame under the hammer, and on the grip strap. This is one of the few Civil War guns you'll find with a documented history showing use by an actual Union Army soldier. This Starr 1858 Revolver was discovered in the serial number listings of the Springfield Research Survey as being issued to someone in Company K of 19th Pennsylvania Cavalry. The trail of bread crumbs were there to follow and it started with Springfield Research which was founded by researcher Frank Mallory in the 1970's. Mallory combed the National Archives in Washington, DC for serial numbers of guns issued to the Military and Federal Agencies. He published 4 Volumes...the last one being Volume 4 in 1999. So with the solid hit on this serial number, we hired a researcher to go into the National Archives and find out to whom this was issued. As it turns out, this particular revolver was issued to John E. Whiteside, who enlisted at 27 years old in Philadelphia, PA on August 26, 1863 and was mustered in as a corporal. His initial muster roll shows he was recruiting other members for this unit, thus his entrance into service as a higher rank than private. Within his service time, he was transferred to Companies E and B as well, and first spent time in Louisiana, next would have been involved in the battles against the Confederate Army of the Tennessee under Braxton Bragg and certainly against Nathan Bedford Forrest, maybe even on hand at the Confederate blowout of Union troops at Brices Crossroads June 10, 1864, then as a Scout in Missouri. Eventually in 1865 he was hospitalized in Baton Rouge, LA for illness and injuries acquired during his service time. Post-war, in October 1865, he was transferred to the military hospital in Philadelphia, PA but did not apply for a pension until July 12, 1890, and it was not approved until February 25th, 1892. He passed away on February 17, 1893. The 19th Pennsylvania Cavalry spent its time in the Mississippi Campaign, with notable battles such as New Orleans and Vicksburg. All of the historical records as well as regimental history will be supplied with the revolver to the purchaser. CONDITION: This revolver is a no-finish gun, basically in the white, showing a multitude of dings, marks and scratches on the metal, and most likely was cleaned at some point. The original walnut grips are slightly undersized due to wear and use, exhibiting multiple dings and scratches but have never been cleaned, sanded or refinished. Both grips have good amounts of the inspector cartouches but I can't make them out due to the wear. Revolver is fully functional and has a very good bore, strong action, and cycles/indexes perfectly with each pull of the trigger. TERMS: No international sales. Antique so it can ship directly to you assuming your local laws allow it. Copy of driver's license required as proof of age. Payment by bank check, money order, personal check, or all major credit cards with 3% surcharge. 3 day non-firing inspection. Buyer pays return shipping.
