Rare Canadian Ross Mk. 1 Trials Bayonet (Canadian and US Marked)
Description: This is one of the first 2,000 Ross bayonets manufactured in January of 1909, and measures 14 3/4" overall with a 10 1/8" straight, single-edged blade without fullers. The blade has an overall freckled, pewter-gray patina with “X" test mark on the ricasso obverse. The first type crossguard has the early stepped muzzle-ring, and is stamped “D^C / 08 / 1-09" (first type Canadian property mark only used on the initial production / 1908 pattern adoption / January, 1909 production date) on the face of the quillon. The walnut grip panels are in very good condition with numerous small handling marks and surface blemishes. The original unit stamp is present on the obverse panel “RCR" (Royal Canadian Regiment), and overstamped with “(Flaming Bomb) / US" property marks added when the bayonet was sold to the United States during WW1. The pommel has typical Ross Rifle Co. markings with Broad Arrow on the obverse, and struck out unit markings on the underside. The leather scabbard has further US property markings on the integral throat, and earlier CEF issue markings on the belt loop for the 185th Battalion, Cape Breton Highlanders. This is a very rare bayonet, in very good-fine condition, and has numerous Canadian and US issue markings as well. It would make a fantastic addition to any collection of WW1 arms and accoutrements.
