Description:
Less than 9,000 made during this Indian Wars Era production. Single-shot hammerless falling-block action rifle designed by Hugo Borchardt and made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company. Manufactured in Bridgeport CT. 45-70 caliber. Military Sharps-Borchardt was made only in .45-70 with 32" round barrels and was purchased by the militias of the states of Michigan, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. Only 11859 Model 1878 Military Rifles were producd in all calibers consisiting of 40-70, .44-77 and .45-70 Govt.

Item Description:
Serial number 7465, .45-70 government caliber, 32 1/8 inch round barrel, standard finish and markings, faded original bluing with original walnut stock.
The top of the barrel is marked "Old Reliable" in script and "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT. CONN." behind the rear sight. It is equipped with a square base blade front sight, military ladder rear sight and sliding trigger safety. Military style stock with two barrel bands, forestock cap and checkered steel butt plate.  All original. Completely functional. Does not come with original cleaning rod.
 
Factory two trigger system. When Hugo Borchardt designed it back in 1877 he came up with the internal hammer, termed the “striker block” system.  So they set the rear “trigger” as the safety.
 
Bore is muted bright, rifling looks strong.
