1860 Vintage Colt Third Model Dragoon in.44 Caliber Cap & Ball
** Rare 8" Inch Barrel Civil War Dragoon**
Description: The Colt Third Model Dragoon was made from 1851 to 1861, with approximately 10,500 manufactured. Manufactured in 1860, this gun has the experimental 8 inch barrel which became standard on the Army Model of 1860. This is a Third Model Dragoon/Third Model (the Third Model's were fitted with a 8 inch round/octagon barrel, most Dragoon's were fitted with 7 1/2 inch barrels) and is fitted with a round trigger guard, Texas Ranger and Indian fight scene rolled engraved on the cylinder, and is in Cal. .44 Percussion. The barrel, cylinder, ram-rod, trigger, and hammer have lost their original finishes and has turned a silver/dark grey patina. The trigger guard retains 20% of its original silver plate and the back-strap about 30% of its original silver plate. The one piece walnut grips retain about 50% of their original finish, with a perfect fit, a couple of pressure dents and a chip, but no cracks. The bore has visible rifling, but is dark due to corrosion. When we recieved this one the action cocked but the cylinder would not turn. The hand and hand spring have been replaced now and the action is "in time" and 100% functional. The serial number is still visible on the cylinder but the Texas Ranger and Indian fight scene is worn off. It is all numbers matching (serial number 18551): Frame to trigger guard, back-strap, cylinder, and ram-rod. If this gun could only talk. According to the family, it was carried by a Confederate officer, from Fairview in western Kentucky, who escorted President Jefferson Davis to Florida after Apptomatics to avoid capture. A very nice Civil War relic with a great word of mouth story from the family. PRICE: SOLD We are Antique & Modern Firearms in Lexington, KY, dealer of fine firearms since 1974.
