Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Very Rare William Read, Boston, 8 Gauge Percussion Single Barrel Shotgun with Nickel Silver Furniture, 8 Ga, mfg. ca. 1840's. This piece comes directly from my long time personal collection of choice big bore shotguns and is a very rare and desirable example of a high quality American made market gun. Large bore shotguns and punt guns were the weapons of choice for commercial hunters who made their living harvesting as much waterfowl as possible on a daily basis to supply local markets and hotels. This gun was found in Vermont and had been taken apart years ago for a restoration that was never completed. I had always intended to have it restored but just never found the time. It's a very clean, solid gun and a rewarding project. The massive Birmingham proofed Damascus barrel measures 38 1/2" long and features an engraved platinum banded breech with a brass bead front sight. The top flat is inscribed within a scroll "WILLIAM READ BOSTON" with "WILLIAM READ BOSTON" marked on the lock. The lock is outstanding with sharp engraving and a huge 3 3/8" tall hammer. The barrel has a smooth light gray patina while the lock shows a darker untouched plum color. I would recommend having the barrel re-browned and leaving the lock. The robust stock features a checkered wrist and is very highly figured. It has been lightly cleaned (but not sanded) and will look absolutely beautiful with a proper refinishing. There is an old 1 1/2" chip missing ahead of the breech bolster, a small repaired crack just ahead of the lock, and a typical small crack ahead of the lock screw. Further there is a stable old 5" crack under the forearm behind the entry pipe. Otherwise the wood is very solid with no further issues. Engraved solid Nickel Silver buttplate, triggerguard, wedge escutcheons, and nosecap. The ramrod entry pipe would have also been Silver but is missing along with the rib, pipes, and ramrod. The action is very crisp and functions flawlessly. The hammer is slightly loose on the tumbler and the lock screw is missing. The barrel appears quite sound with no issues except for a very slight ding about 5" back from the muzzle on the left side. The gun currently weighs a hefty 11 lbs 8 oz and will be heavier once completed. This is a very fine and rare 8 Gauge and a straight forward restoration. Properly restored I would value this gun over $3500. Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
