Merkel 47SL 20 Gauge – SIDELOCK ACTION, KILLER WOOD, 2002, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Merkel, Year 2002, 20 Gauge, 6lbs 7oz, Chokes IC/M, LOP 14 1/2", DAH 2 1/2", DAC 1 7/16" Serial Number: 481244 Merkel shotguns made in Suhl Germany demonstrate the famous German engineering, with strength and function always foremost in the design. The Merkel 47SL is a premium model from Merkel that was discontinued in 2012 at which time it was retailing for $8950. This is their full sidelock ejector model, with sideclips, Greener cross-bolt, and double underlug bites (Purdey style locking mechanism) making for 4 solid locking devices on this gun. Most of the 47SL guns that you will see were built before 1992 and have the very European look of a cheek piece on the stock and sling swivels mounted on the barrel and belly of the buttstock. Most Americans were not fond of that look so Merkel “Americanized” their offering by providing a stock without the cheek piece and the swivels were eliminated, making a very traditional looking side by side that was in keeping with American tastes. Most of these guns were built with rather plain wood, hand checkered, and the actions hand engraved with some tasteful scroll work. This fine Merkel, sn481244 built in 2002 has exceptionally figured European walnut that is far nicer than any I have seen recently, and most all gunners love fine wood! The gun is in excellent mechanical condition with crisp double triggers, strong well-timed ejectors, and a positive auto safety. The 26 ¾” barrels are choked the most desirable IC/M and have mirror bores and 3” factory chambers for those late season pheasants and waterfowl. With the IC/M chokes and modern steels in the barrels, you can even shoot any of the non-toxic shot in this gun, including Hevishot and steel, according to the ballistic experts writing for the Shooting Sportsman and other outdoor magazines. The gun is in high factory original condition with 99% factory blue, and only light handling wear on the action and wood. The barrels are still tight as new on the hinge pin and breech face. The gun has not been fired very often by the looks of things. Finding a full sidelock 20ga. Merkel with a straight gripped highly figured stock and in such superb condition is getting harder to do. Merkel has eliminated the sideclip features on most of their guns and have been shipping guns with a lot less figure in order to make things more affordable. You are far better off finding a great used gun like this one at an affordable price than buying the new guns with machine engraving and checkering and plain-jane wood. Thanks for looking!
