French 1777 Naval Musketoon Model AN IX. Made by the Imperial Manufactory of St. Etienne. The lock marking “Manufacture Imperiale De Saint-Etienne” indicates that this Naval musketoon was assembled under the reign of Napoleon I, the “Emperor of the French”. The overall length is 45”. The round .67 caliber barrel is approximately 29¾”. Bore is good with some pitting. All metal has an even, smooth gray/brown patina. The brass front band, trigger guard and butt plate are nicely aged, the rear band is a replacement. The barrel proof is a “B” within an oval. To the rear of that appears to be three (1813?) numbers. The barrel tang is marked “M” and “9”. Several parts have a crown/G inspection mark. The stock is good overall with a chip on either side of the barrel tang. The stocker’s name, which appears to read “C. Nurri”, is stamped on the left flat. “65” is stamped at the rear of the flat. The round cartouche on the right butt is dated December 1813. The round inlay within reads “E·F”. The action functions correctly. Overall, this is a very good example of a model AN IX Naval musketoon that could be easily improved with a correct style band. This is missing for most collections.
