WHITNEY & BEALS
"WALKING BEAM"
REVOLVER
Description: WHITNEY & BEALS "WALKING BEAM" REVOLVER These guns were Manufactured by Eli Whitney, who ran an Industrial Factory specializing in working with Independent inventors who did not have the capital or resources to do their own Manufacturing. This curious little pocket revolver was invented and patented in 1854 by Fordyce Beals. A Second Model, commonly known as a "Walking Beam" or Walking Lever Type, after the mechanism of the trigger moving the cylinder. The First Model has a Brass Frame, and is 6-shot... This Second Model is identical to the First model, except for the Iron Frame. A .31 caliber, with a 5-inch barrel, and a 7-shot cylinder, is an old "cap&ball" muzzleloader. These guns work only in Single-Action Mode, the hammer has to be thumb-cocked... The Trigger Pushed forward, causes the cylinder to rotate 1/2 of a revolution; pulled backwards again, it brings the Chamber in alignment with the Barrel. These guns were Slow and Difficult to handle, and the Cylinder had to be taken out for loading. (build a better mouse trap) The "Walking Beam" has become very scarce today and is one of the most curious American revolvers of the Percussion Revolver Era, and this one is a Fine Example.
