SUSPECT IN THE JACK THE RIPPER MURDERS CA. 1880’S. Plaque on case engraved “SIR G. ARTHUR, BART/2ND LIFE GUARDS” and containing his full dress Hertfordshire Imperial Yeomanry helmet. Sir Grant Arthur, 3rd Baronet of Upper Canada served in the 2nd Life Guards from 1878 and serving in the Egyptian Campaign of 1882 and the Nile Expedition of 1884-5 with the Guards. He was however arrested in 1888 while roaming at night in Whitechapel in an old hunting coat and slouch hat disguise at the time of the murders and gaining him front page publicity in the London Times. He apparently fit the description of the “Ripper” and was a suspect for some time. Friend and drinking buddy of the Prince of Wales he was apparently sent off to the Hertfordshire Yeomanry till the heat was off. Never proven he later served in the Boer War and WW1 rising to high rank and Private Secretary to the Secretary of State. He also was a well known writer and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Literature. All original and from a very old American collection formed in the 1940’s and never on the market before. Very good all original condition. Helmet with the original lining and case in as found attic condition. Price: $4,900 |
