Bacon Arms Pepperbox, Cal. .22 RF, 1860's Vintage, #948 of 1,000 SOLD
Description: This is an example of one of the estimated 1,000 Bacon Arms pepperbox revolvers manufactured in the late 1860s (Thomas K. Bacon was the founder of the company and was also involved with the Manhattan Fire Arms Co. as the superintendent. He also had business dealings with Ethan Allen and Allen & Thurber. When Manhattan moved their operation away from Norwich, Bacon left the company to stay behind and work on his own firearms manufacturing company). The 6-shot barrel cluster is marked "BACON ARMS CO. NORWICH, CONN". It has a knurled barrel cluster pin, checkered hammer, smooth spur trigger and smooth square butt grips. The left grip panel and cylinder are numbered to the gun (serial number is stamped on the left side of the frame, under the left grip). The gun is fitted with a 2 3/8 inch cylinder/barrels, Rosewood grips, built on a iron frame, and chambered in .22 RF. The condition of the gun is good, with the barrel/cylinder appearing to having been gold blued and has assorted rust pitting. The frame was originally silver plated but all of the plating has worn off. The hammer also appears to having be cold blued and the grips fit well and appear to retain some of their original finish, with no cracks or chips. The action works, hammer stays back when cocked and the cylinder turns with each cocking of the action, but the cylinder does not lock solidly in place on some of its bores. A decent example of a rare and seldom seen gun. PRICE: SOLD We are Antique & Modern Firearms in Lexington, KY, dealer of fine firearms since 1974.
