Blade is beautifully acid etched with patriotic themes on both sides. The hilt is brass relief cast and gilded. The sharkskin is stained to a black is blue hue. The scabbard is nickel plated and has one sided relief gilded brass mounts with patriotic themes. The scabbard is inscribed “May 9th 1898/ Presented to/ Bro. W.E. Thompson/ Major 14th Regiment/ N.G. P./ by Lodge No. 136 B.P.O. Elks McKeesport, Pa" Major William E. Thompson turned into a Colonel of the National Guard of Pennsylvania. Col. Thompson spent his career working in government and held several elected positions in addition to his service in the Pennsylvania National guard.
