Description:
This is a very scarce 1911A1 Colt manufactured 1941- even more rare because of the Swartz safety. This pistol is as rare as the 500 1911A1 Singers. This is one of 250 “off the shelf” Colt manufactured commercial pistols that were simply engraved for the Argentine Navy under contract with the Argentine Navy in 1941. See, Colt letter. It comes in the original numbered box. The 500 Colt commercial pistols picked for this contract were taken from the Colt lot between serial numbers C198700 to C208700 range. Records suggest a total number of 500 so they must have been shipped in lots of less than 500- this pistol was in a lot of 250. You will not find this Colt referenced in the Blue Book or any of the Colt books i.e. Clawson or Harrison. With only 500 of these pistols originally in the contract in 1941, they are a rarity today particularly, as this one, in original finish. Most of these 1941 contract pistols were subsequently parkerized leaving substantially less in original commercial finish. This commercial finish pistol is exactly like any other commercial Colt Government Model from the period with two exceptions: the Argentine National crest is roll-marked across the top of the slide and the right side of the slide is pantograph engraved "REPUBLICA ARGENTINA/ARMADA NACIONAL - 1941". This pistol is extra rare in that it has the scarce Swartz safety mechanism still intact (this was an early firing pin safety which locked the firing pin unless the grip safety was squeezed). This safety was patented in 1937 and dropped shortly after WWII. This pistol is all original in both finish and all components. The slide is factory serial numbered to match the frame. The barrel is marked "HS" [High Standard] on the right and "P" on the left side. Overall condition is excellent with the original high commercial gloss finish. The pistol retains about 98% of the original polished blue factory finish. There is some sharp edge wear, and a few minor scattered patina ovals. There is no pitting. The pistol was acquired from an Argentine diplomat who in the 80s brought it into the U.S. to sell- therefore no import marks. The dark brown stocks were on the pistol when acquired. The mechanics are in perfect working order (including the Swartz safety) and the bore is excellent with bright, sharp rifling. It comes with one correct/original prewar two tone magazine with pinned base that is marked "COLT 45 AUTO.". This is not one of the Argentine made pistols. This is a very rare Colt made commercial pistol that is seldom encountered in original condition.
