Lucius W. Pond Front Loading Separate Chamber Revolver, Cal. 22 RF,
1860 to 1870
SOLD
Description: The .22 RF Lucius W. Pond, Worcester, Massachusetts, Front Loading Separate Chamber Revolvers were made from 1863 to 1870, with approximately 2,000 manufactured. Per Flayderman's Guide: The Pond's unusual removable individual steel chambers was an attempt to circumvent the Rolling White patent under control of Smith & Wesson. The 7-shot revolvers were built on a square butt brass frame with silver plated finish, a 3 1/2 inch barrel and cylinder of blued steel, walnut or rosewood grips, spur trigger, and with barrel markings : L.W. POND, WORCESTER, MASS. PAT"T SEPT. 8, 1863 PAT'D NOV. 8, 1864. This gun is as described but is overall nickel plated, rather than silver plated and blued, and is fitted with rosewood grips. It is a all numbers matching gun with the frame, barrel, cylinder, cylinder pin, trigger, and grips with the same number. It retains about 90% of its original nickel plate, with some areas of minor flaking. It retains all of its original steel individual chambers, which are easily removeable (what are the chances these would all be in place since the 1860's) and the action functions perfectly. The bore has strong rifling but there are some areas of corrosion, perfectly shootable. The grips retain most of their original finish, with assorted handling marks, no cracks or chips. This is a quality piece, it is very well made with great attention to design, fit and finish. This is an intesting revolver and I've enjoyed studying and taking pictures of it.
