Description:
Many New England towns and city militias had guns built for thier militia often using English components suck as locks and would have the barrel , stock and hardware made locally. By virtue that this fine gun has a metal ram-rod and militia form it was most likely made as a flintlock and later converted to percussion.No barrel maroings found and the lock was made by A.W. Spies. Militia muskets were built as a smaller form as they were not expected to be battel used over a prollonged period like governement issued firearms from the Springfield Armory. The smooth bore barel measures about .35" and the bore measures at the inside diameter of about .50 caliber. The metal furniture is similat to early 19th century designs even late 18th century also. The lockworks well but the mainspring is weak. The full length stock is American walnut.These were taken out of stores monthly for militia drills and shooting normally done at a local tavern on the town green to get everyone out to practice, two rations of rum was issued , and for poor farmers this was their day off from work and to have some fun, usually held on a Sunday After church.
