U.S. Model 1863 Type I Percussion Rifle-Musket by Springfield Armory...CIVIL WAR...LAYAWAY?
Description: SOLD!......U.S. Model 1863 Type I Percussion Rifle-Musket by Springfield Armory .58 cal., 40” barrel with a bright fair bore showing areas of moderate pitting in the otherwise strong rifling. The barrel, triggerguard, lock and middle barrel band are toning to a lightly-moderately oxidized gray and brown patina with some light pitting around the breech and scattered small spots of softened pinprick pitting overall along with some fine cleaning striations along the upper half of the barrel. There is moderate oxidation on the buttplate while the upper and lower barrel bands are toning to a brown patina. The top of the breech is dated 1863 while the left quarter-flat is marked with a crisp “V / P / (eagle head)” proof. The lockplate is also dated 1863 with a Federal Eagle ahead of the hammer and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” below the bolster which displays a slightly-softened small Federal Eagle. The American black walnut stock rates about very good plus as perhaps very lightly cleaned with a later added finish and spots of darker oxidation staining along the areas where the wood and metal meet and some expected scattered light handling marks from military service. The left stock flat features two softened inspectors’ cartouches; one is illegible and the other is marked “ESA”. The middle band is a little loose on the forend, the original sights and sling swivels are intact, a correct cupped tulip-head ramrod with straight shaft is included and the action remains strong and crisp. The Model 1863 Type I was produced by Springfield Armory for only nine months.........2nd Firearm ships FREE with this one! S/H $45...Thanks....Greg 18-19 SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Springfield |
