Description:
Browning Hi-Power Olympian Grade Bolt Action Rifle 30-06 Caliber ... 22" barrel ... LOA 43" ... LOP 13 3/4" over 3/4" pad ... DAC 1 3/4" ... DAH 2 1/2 " ... 8lbs 14oz empty weight (scope mounted) Trigger is a very crisp 3# with zero creep.
This is a fine high-grade high-power Olympian signed by two of Browning's best engravers, Gaston Vandermissen and Jose Baerten.
The 22" barrel has an excellent bore and retains about 98% original blue with very minor wear at the muzzle with some very light scratches and extremely light pinprick pits on one edge.
The receiver and bottom metal retain all their original factory satin chrome. The receiver ring shows a bellowing elk left and a leaping antelope right with beautiful relief foliate scroll, signed by Gaston Vandermissen.
The floorplate and triggerguard show the typical standing deer amidst a woodland scene with a walking bear on the bow of the guard, these flanked by the same beautiful relief foliate scroll. These incredibly detailed and true-to-life animals were engraved by Jose Baerten. The trigger retains all of its original gold plate and the bolt and its attendant parts are bright with the extractor showing the nice fine jewelling the Olympian is known for; there is a minor scattered oxidation staining here and there but they could easily be brightened if one wished.
The high-gloss finished Monte Carlo style walnut stock rates very good showing the lovely carved checkered panels seen on the Olympian grade with contrasting forend tip and gripcap of rosewood set off by white line spacers. The gripcap has the gold diamond-shaped monogram plate at its center; it is un-engraved. The stock shows very minor crazing from the years and shows scattered light handling marks with wear to the varnish along the sharp edge of the flared cheekpiece and sharp edge of the pistolgrip cap. There is the remnant of a minor crack or flake at the rear of the tang which appears to have been neatly repaired, it is unobtrusive and the very fine checkering shows some flattening and wear from use afield. The original Browning 1" ventilated recoil pad is slightly compressed on its left edge.
Interestingly, the serial number on this example is on the barrel and is within the Medallion serial number range. We know that occasionally you will find a Safari or Medallion grade serial number on a factory Olympian grade gun. Matt Eastman's book Browning Sporting Arms of Distinction states that an original Olympian with another grade guns serial number is "something a little bit special". This is a 1961-manufactured gun and therefore there is no danger of salt wood.
Accompanying the rifle is a Browning 3x-9x adjustable scope with a crosshair reticle and crisp optics mounted on a one-piece base with two piece rings.
This is a really super, early Olympian, factory engraved by two of Fabrique Nationales most well-thought-of engravers.
