The metal surfaces of this Type III musket are toning to a brown patina with light to moderate oxidation and pitting throughout. Conversion was done utilizing the arsenal cone-in-barrel/Belgian alteration leaving only part of the brass pan remaining which has aged to a mellow ochre patina. The lockplate is properly marked with the remnants of a ''(Federal Eagle) / US'' ahead of the hammer and ''SPRING / FIELD / 1838'' to the rear, the breech tang bears the remnants of ''1838'' and the buttplate tang is stamped with a softened ''US''. The smooth black walnut straight grip stock rates good to perhaps very good with a flexing chip at the toe and multiple cracks and handling marks commensurate with military service and likely retirement over a fireplace. The stock features the remnants of two inspectors' cartouches with one on the left flat and the other behind the triggerguard tang where a softened ''J.B.S.'' inspection mark also remains visible. The rear band , sling swivel are no longer present, a steel trumpet-head ramrod is in place below the barrel and the action remains crisp if not strong. Percussion-converted Model 1816 muskets were issued in large numbers to Union soldiers in the early years of the Civil War.
