Description:
The item for sale is a documented Texas Ranger revolver having belonged to Sgt. John J. Edds. There is much historical information and records about Sgt. Edds. He served with the Rangers along the Texas/Mexico border during turbulent times .(1915 - 1920's) which saw the Mexican Revolution, Bandit Wars of 1915, Canales Investigation , Plan of San Diego añd many others. . He was born in November 1890 in Harlingen, Texas. His father was from Alabama and his mother  from Texas and as he said she was of "Spanish ancestry". His time with the Rangers was colorful to say the least. He was one of the Rangers accused in the famous Cana!es investigation concerned with alleged Ranger abuse. He was accused during that investigation of murdering two Mexicans, one was a deserter. He served as a Sergeant under Captain Will Wright (the Devil Captain), in company D and for a time in company K. While patrolling the border considerable time was spent in shoot-outs with smugglers, bandits ànd other desperados. He was a contemporary of Ranger Frank Hamer (to become Captain Frank Hamer , the most famous of all Texas Rangers). After leaving the Rangers in the 1920's he continued to work in law enforcement. His last position was as a guard at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio. He died in 1956. This is documented in the attached articles and publications. In the photo provided he is second from the left. This photo was taken shortly after a shoot-out with smugglers. The provenance begins with a notarized affadavit confirming purchase of the revolver from John Edds. Further documentation includes the Texas Ranger Museum and the Texas Gun Collectors Association. The revolver is a Belgium copy of a Colt. Probably carried as a back-up by Sgt. Edds.

The following publications are resources for the exploits of Sgt. John J. Edds:
