Description:
A very fine 19th Century Percussion Halfstock Sporting and Target Rifle of about 38 cal., 25 1/2” part octagon part round barrel with a fouled bore. All of the iron surfaces are a dull gunmetal gray patina and show overall scattered light oxidation and some pinprick pitting, a bit more moderate near the muzzle, but still not detracting from looks.Simple silver blade front sight and very long tang aperture rear with an elevation adjustment on the tang itself. Lock is marked “Wm Read & Son Boston” and shows some light engraving. There is a pewter nosecap, brass furniture and a small rectangular German silver inlay on the cheekpiece. The stock appears to be constructed of cherry and rates about very good showing an old light cleaning years ago with the expected light dings and handling marks, scant left side cheekpiece, a number of drying cracks and one prominent crack to the left of the upper tang, but stable and not deep. Single trigger equipped, the lock seems to function, half-cock is worn, there is an old antique replacement ramrod included.
