U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Antique (from Indian Wars era), with Shoulder Sling, Serial # 475745, .45-70 Gov't. Center Fire, cal., 32-5/8'' round barrel with block-blade front (doubles as bayonet lug) and windage-elevation adjustable Buffington rear (marked ''R'' for Rifle) sights, marked ''V/P/(eaglehead)/P'' and ''A'' at breech; trapdoor breechblock is marked ''US/Model/1884'' at hinge; flat lockplate has ''(spread-wing eagle)'' and ''U.S./Springfield'' under latch; steel fittings include two-piece trigger guard with sling swivel at front, curved buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw, 2 spring-retained bands (top with stacking swivel), grooved trigger, nosecap, and slotted button-tip rod; oil-stained walnut fullstock has rectangular ''SWP'' (Master Armorer and Chief Inspector Samuel W. Porter) over ''1889'' cartouche at left wrist, and ''F'' over a fancy encircled ''P'' on belly.

Condition is near excellent, the barrel retains approx. 95% smooth military blue (light scratching at muzzle from bayonet), the lock, hammer, trigger guard, bands, nosecap and rod with 90% thinning blue; the trapdoor retaining lovely mottled case colors, buttplate with 50% blue.

Stock is smooth with light marks (mostly at belly), nice grain and color, deep inspector's cartouche. Sharp edges and markings, strong and smooth action, mostly bright bore with sharp rifling. Russet leather sling is sound and smooth showing only light age
