Description:
This may have been a dual purpose militia flintlock-musket, or perhaps was always a fowler, the architecture is very martial however. It is about 14 bore with a 46'' barrel showing an oxidized bore. The barrel is a mix of lightly cleaned gunmetal gray with overall speckled light oxidation, with more moderate oxidation and pitting near the breech. The lock is a replacement marked only ''New York'', it does not fit the original inletting in the stock precisely. There is a brass buttplate, serpentine brass sideplate, brass guard and loosely acorn-shaped monogram plate atop the wrist as we see on Brown Bess musket or early Indian trade musket. . The English walnut stock rates fair to perhaps near good showing an old light cleaning, and overall dings and handling marks, and a few lengthy chips or cracks on both sides of the barrel at the barrel channel. An antique ramrod is included, the lock functions loosely mechanically and one sideplate screw is missing as it would not fit the parameters of this lock; the other is a re-drilled replacement, again due to placement of the lock screw hole. A salty old New England fowler with a nice long overall length of 62'' that would look perfect above the mantel.When buying a gun always have it examined by a competent gunsmith before shooting.
