Description:
A fine mid 19th century rifle of about 48 cal., 35 1/2” octagon barrel with a moderately oxidized smoothbore. The metal surfaces are a plum and gray patina with overall light oxidation and some moderate pitting in the cap splash area near the nipple. The barrel is completely unmarked however the back-action lockplate is marked “HT Cooper/New York”. There is a pewter nosecap and German silver furniture with engraved bow of guard, faceted tang on the buttplate and four piece German silver patchbox with light scroll engraving and release in the toeplate. The American walnut stock rates otherwise about very good showing an old light cleaning, a few drying cracks and a large repair to cracks from the left side of barrel breech and tang over the top to the rear of the lock; Equipped with double set triggers and a single-acting lock which seems to operate properly; there is an antique replacement ramrod included and the very front of the barrel underrib is coming unsoldered.The furniture is German silver with ornate hand chisel engraving, and a squirrel petwer inlay in the butt-stock..
